Upcoming gala to raise money for autism awareness

A prominent figure will visit the suburban areas in the coming month to promote awareness and raise donations for autism services. Dr. Temple Grandin, renowned for her work in autism and advocacy, will make a special appearance at the Denim and Diamonds Gala.

Dr. Sylvia Smith, CEO of Giant Steps Illinois, will join her. For those who may not be aware, Giant Steps is an organization that serves individuals with autism, from infants to adults.

It provides resources and support for families, recognizing the challenges they face in caring for a loved one with ASD, especially education-wise.

About Autism

According to recent research, autism is now recognized as a spectrum disorder. This means that individuals with autism can vary significantly in their level of functioning, from more severely impacted and nonverbal to highly functional individuals.  The best way is to get early intervention for the affected child. It is also important for Autistic individuals to receive continued support and training throughout their lives to reach their full potential and live a purposeful and happy life.

According to Giant Steps’ CEO, the company’s team is composed of BCBAs, social workers, and teachers who work together to provide individualized support for each child. They prioritize understanding a child’s needs and accepting them as they are, regardless of their background.

Diversity

The CEO also mentions that the company has had the opportunity to work with diverse children who have unique strengths and challenges.  “We accept them when they walk in the front door for who they are.” This inclusive approach is highly valued at Giant Steps.  Overall, the team at Giant Steps is dedicated to supporting and empowering every child who walks through their doors.
